The towers of the central sanctuary greet the dawn in formal majesty. Sunrise at Angkor Wat helps to scatter the ghosts which still haunt the vast temple complex located just a few kilometres outside the town of Siem Reap, the official gateway to Angkor. Built in the 9th century across more than 100 square kilometres (39 square miles) by the Khmer kings, it passed back and forth between Hindus and Buddhists before being abandoned in the 15th century. Vegetation encroaching on countless sandstone shrines and temples buried elaborately carved reliefs, relegating Angkor to the realm of myth until a French adventurer rediscovered it in 1860.
